UCA tennis sweeps Grambling

CONWAY — After suffering through five consecutive defeats to start the year, the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears recorded their
first victory of the 2007 season on Tuesday (March 6) by blanking Grambling State 7-0.

Sophomores Rebecca McCullough and Jenny Paine each recorded shutouts for UCA in singles play, scoring 6-0, 6-0 wins over Ashley Williams and Malaina Davis, respectively. Paine also teamed with sophomore Rebecca Miller to defeat Airien Williams and Faaith Williams 8-1 in No. 2 doubles. Miller went on to record a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lakeythia Beck in No. 2 singles. The Sugar Bears rounded out doubles play with a pair of 8-4 wins, as Petra Keilova and Charissa Colclough defeated Beck and Faaith Williams in the No. 1 slot, and the twin tandem of Jordan and Lindsey Short defeated Omosefe Amen and Patricia Gallegos in No. 3.

In No. 1 singles, Keilova defeated Amen 6-2, 6-3. Colclough won in No. 3 singles over Faaith Williams 6-1, 6-0, and Heidi Miller scored a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gallegos in No. 4 singles.

The Sugar Bears travel to McNeese State and Lamar for a pair out Southland Conferences matches next weekend before stepping out of conference to take on the University of Houston of Conference USA.

UCA returns home on Saturday, March 17, when they take on Nicholls State at Noon.
