LAKE CHARLES, La. — The University of Central Arkansas tennis team defeated McNeese State 5-2 to pick up their first-ever Southland Conference victory on Saturday (March 10).

With the win, the Sugar Bears improve to 2-5 and 1-1 in league play, while the Cowgirls drop to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the SLC.

McNeese won the doubles point by taking two-of the three match-ups. UCA's only doubles victory came at the number two slot where sophomores Jenny Paine and Rebecca Miller defeated Natascha Jongeneel and Petra Gudelj 8-5.

The Sugar Bears went on to win five of the six singles matches, all of which were close. Junior Charissa Colclough defeated Jongeneel at number two 6-4, 7-5. Miller downed Victoria Martinez at number three 6-3, 6-3 and sophomore Heidi Miller beat Romana Hueller 7-5, 6-3 in number four singles. At number five singles, Paine took down Gudelj 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and sophomore Rebecca McCullough defeated Inga Efimenko 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 in number six.

The Cowgirls' only single win came in the top match-up, where Urska Dobersek defeated freshman Petra Keilova 6-0, 6-4.

UCA will take on Lamar in Southland Conference play in Beaumont, Texas on Sunday.
