Tennis team falls in opener

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas tennis team lost their 2007 opener with a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Northeastern State at the Mabee Center on Saturday evening.

The Sugar Bears (0-1) played each match closely, but the Lady Reds (3-0), the 19th-ranked team in NCAA II, pulled off the sweep.

In doubles, the No. 10 team of Simona Stoica and Amanda Stone defeated UCA's Petra Keilova and Charissa Colclough 8-2 at the number one position. NSU's Romana Jovanovicova and Gabriela de Campo overcame a 6-3 defecit to defeat Rebecca McCullough and Jordan Short 8-6 at the number three spot.

Maryna Tkadenko, ranked 43rd in Division II, downed Keilova 6-0, 6-2 in number one singles. Stoica, the No. 23 player in DII, defeated sophomore Rebecca Miller 5-7, 6-0 and 10-2 in the tiebreaker at the number two spot. Sophomore Sugar Bear Jenny Paine played Stone close, falling 6-4, 6-2 at number five singles.

UCA will be back in action on Feb. 20 when they face Arkansas-Little Rock at Burns Park.
