CONWAY — University of Central Arkansas forward Durrell Nevels was named to the 2007 All-Southland Conference men’s basketball third team on Tuesday (March 6).

Nevels, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound junior from Hot Springs, led the Southland Conference in blocked shots with 3.3 per game. He was second in the league in rebounding at 8.3 per game and also shot 51.1 percent from the field to rank 11th in the league.

Nevels, who transferred from Three Rivers Community College in Cape Girardeau, Mo., scored in double figures in 25 of 30 games this season. He helped the Bears set a school record for blocked shots with 166.

Nevels and senior Fernando Johnson both set the school record for block shots in a game this season with seven, which Nevels accomplished twice. He is already one short of tying the school record for career blocks (100) in only one season.

Nevels had season highs of 20 points against Lamar and 14 rebounds against McNeese State.

Chris Daniels of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was named the Player of the Year, while Lamar Sanders of Lamar was named the Newcomer of the Year. The Freshman of the Year award went to Ro’ger Guignard of Texas-Arlington, while Ronnie Arrow of A&M-CC was named the Coach of the Year.
